The Pioneer SX-3900 Receiver was the top of the line Pioneer Fluroscan receiver. It featured the Pioneer Non-Switching amplifier, this time delivering an earth-shaking 120 watts per channel with less than 0.005% total harmonic distortion. It offered a number of additional features over the Pioneer SX-3800, including 2 high pass filters, tone turn-over controls for bass and treble, an adapter loop switch, FM de-emphasis, tape duplicate, and 2 phono inputs. As far as silver iron goes, this was it, the best of the last, weighing in at 44 pounds. The SX-3900 was available from 1980 to 1982 at an $800 suggested list price. Yes, hi I just picked up a sx-3900 receiver at a garage sale for 5.00 bucks. Got it home cleaned it up inside and out, sounds great but need your advice on something. My right speaker is weak, does it just need a good cleaning on the balance control knob? And yes your right ,it is a heavy beast, but I love it. thanks again any help will be great.

I bought this receiver back in 1982. I saved all summer for it. I was 17. Loved it then and now. I still use it as my primary receiver. Good clean watts and sound

Bought this receiver back in 2009, and it’s truly the best receiver you can buy for the money. Today, it usually retails for around $300 on ebay (I paid $60 for it at a pawn shop before knowing what I was getting myself into). You can’t go wrong with this receiver. The quartz locked system, lighting, and everything else is awesome! Funny thing with this receiver is that the FM, AM, AUX, TUNER 1, and TUNER 2 buttons work in a mechanical fashion (look under the hood to see what I mean).

WARNING: do NOT put anything on top of the receiver when in use because it will certainly overheat. For me, it was an unfortunate accident, but luckily i was able to find someone to fix it. As of now, I have Klipsch La Scala speakers hooked up to it and I couldn’t imagine owning a better sound system for the money.

I did want to mention that I also own a Pioneer SG-9800 because I am extremely unsatisfied with the product. Oddly, I’ve heard good things about it online and yet whenever I hook it up to the SX-3900, I hear a low background noise (very similar to that when listening to a cassette tape). I have no idea if this noise was to be expected or not, but I was originally expecting no noise at all. I would be interested in hearing what others have to say about the SG-9800.

But as far as the SX-3900, you cannot go wrong with such a great receiver. I agree with the slogan name of this particular model: it is “the best of the last” from Pioneer.

Bought this new in Boston in about 1981. Have loved it all these years (still rocking fine). Needed it for a pair of Bose 901s Series II. Good rock sound. The 120 a channel was just enough to run the Bose in a house.
